UK Surf Schools

A good surf school is the best way to start surfing. A qualified instructor will teach you how to paddle, catch waves and stand up, but just as importantly they will show you how to read the sea, spot rip currents and stay safe around other surfers. The UK has hundreds of surf schools, from small family run businesses on quiet beaches to large centres in the busiest surf towns, and there is one to suit every age, ability and budget.

What to look for in a surf school

Look for a school whose instructors hold a recognised qualification, such as Surfing England, Welsh Surfing Federation or ISA coaching awards, along with up to date beach lifeguard and first aid certificates. Many schools are accredited by their national surfing body, which means they have been checked for safety, equipment and coaching standards. Good schools keep group sizes small, provide well fitting wetsuits and soft foam boards, and choose the safest beach and time of day for your lesson.

Types of lesson

Most surf schools offer group lessons, which are the most affordable way to learn and a fun way to meet other people. Private lessons give you one to one coaching and faster progress, while family lessons let everyone learn together. Many schools also run multi day courses, kids' clubs in the school holidays and improver sessions for those who can already stand up and want to start riding green waves. Some offer adaptive surfing for people with disabilities.

When to book

Summer is the busiest time for surf lessons, so book ahead for school holidays and weekends. Spring and autumn are quieter and often bring better waves, with the water still reasonably warm in September and October.
