Surf Schools in Porthcawl
1 surf school in Porthcawl, South Wales.
Porthcawl is one of the busiest surf towns in Wales and a great place to learn. Its main surf beach, Rest Bay, picks up plenty of swell and is easy to reach from Cardiff, Swansea and the M4, which makes the town popular for lessons, school groups and surf clubs. Local instructors know the beaches well and can find suitable waves for most levels.
Where surf lessons take place in Porthcawl
Rest Bay, on the western edge of the town, is the main beach for lessons. It has a mix of sand and rock and picks up most swells, with facilities and a watersports centre overlooking the beach. On bigger days, schools may use the more sheltered beaches closer to the town centre, such as Coney Beach and Sandy Bay. The tide makes a big difference here, so lessons are planned around the best stage of the tide.
What to expect from a lesson
Beginner lessons usually last two to three hours and include a wetsuit, a soft foam board and safety equipment. Your instructor will start on the beach, teaching you how to paddle, catch a wave and stand up, and explaining how to stay safe and avoid rip currents. Then you will practise in shallow water. Many people stand up in their first lesson.
Porthcawl's surf schools also offer private lessons, family sessions, children's clubs and improver coaching, and many work with schools, youth groups and corporate groups.
Choosing a surf school in Porthcawl
Look for qualified instructors with recognised coaching and beach lifeguard awards, and a school accredited by the Welsh Surfing Federation. Ask about group sizes and what is included.
When to book
Lessons run from spring to autumn, with some schools offering sessions all year round. The Bristol Channel has a very large tidal range, so lesson times change from day to day. Book early in the summer holidays.
