Surf Businesses in Cornwall

Surf schools, shops, camps and board repairs in 6 surf towns across Cornwall.

Cornwall is the heart of British surfing. With Atlantic swell on three sides and more than 400 miles of coastline, it has more surf breaks, surf schools and surf shops than anywhere else in the UK. Whether you are booking a first lesson for the family or looking for a shaper to build your next board, this is the county where most people start.

The north coast and the south coast

The north coast faces straight into the Atlantic and picks up swell most days of the year. Newquay is the busiest surf town in the country, with Fistral Beach at its centre and a run of beaches either side. Further up the coast, Polzeath and Bude offer wide sandy bays that suit beginners and improvers, while Perranporth has three miles of sand to spread out on. Out west, St Ives and Sennen sit close to Land's End, where the swell is often bigger and the scenery is hard to beat.

The south coast is more sheltered and needs a big winter swell to come alive, but when it does it can produce excellent waves with far fewer people in the water. It also gives you somewhere to go when strong northerly winds blow the north coast out.

When to surf in Cornwall

Summer brings smaller, friendlier waves, warmer water and RNLI lifeguards on the most popular beaches, which makes it the best time for lessons. Autumn is when many local surfers are happiest: the water is still relatively warm, the crowds have gone and the first proper Atlantic swells arrive. Winter is cold and powerful, and best left to experienced surfers in a good 5mm wetsuit with boots and gloves.
