Surf Businesses in South Wales
Surf schools, shops, camps and board repairs in 3 surf towns across South Wales.
South Wales has some of the best and most varied surf in Britain. From the limestone cliffs of the Gower Peninsula to the open beaches of Pembrokeshire, the coastline faces the Atlantic and picks up plenty of swell, especially in autumn and winter. It is also one of the most accessible surf regions in the UK, with Cardiff, Swansea and the M4 all close by.
Gower, Porthcawl and Pembrokeshire
The Gower Peninsula was the first place in Britain to be named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it is packed with surf beaches. Llangennith and Rhossili offer a huge sweep of sand on the west coast, while Caswell, Langland and the bays along the south side work well on bigger swells and northerly winds. Porthcawl, between Swansea and Cardiff, has Rest Bay and several reef and beach breaks within a short drive, making it a busy hub for surf schools and clubs.
Further west, Pembrokeshire has a wilder, quieter feel. Freshwater West is one of the most powerful beach breaks in Wales and has strong rip currents, so it suits experienced surfers. Newgale, Whitesands and Manorbier are popular alternatives, and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park makes the whole area a great base for a surf trip.
When to surf in South Wales
Autumn and winter bring the most consistent swell and the best waves. Spring can be excellent too, with lighter winds and longer days. Summer is smaller and more suitable for lessons, with RNLI lifeguards on the most popular beaches. The water is cold for much of the year, so a 5mm wetsuit with boots is standard from November to April. Local surf schools and shops are the best source of advice on where to go on the day.
