Surf Schools in Polzeath
3 surf schools in Polzeath, Cornwall.
Polzeath is one of the best beginner surf beaches in Britain, and its surf schools have taught thousands of families and first timers to ride the waves. The wide, flat, sandy bay creates gentle, rolling waves that are ideal for learning, and the friendly village atmosphere makes it a lovely place to spend a few days in and out of the water.
Where surf lessons take place in Polzeath
Most lessons take place on Polzeath beach itself, right in front of the village. At low tide the beach is huge, giving instructors plenty of space to find the best waves for their groups. At high tide the beach is smaller and the waves can be steeper, so schools plan lessons around the tide. When the surf is too big or messy, sheltered spots nearby can sometimes be used instead.
What to expect from a lesson
Beginner lessons usually last two to three hours, with a wetsuit, soft foam board and safety equipment provided. Your instructor will start with a session on the sand, covering how to lie on the board, paddle, catch a wave and pop up to your feet, as well as how to stay safe and spot rip currents. Then you will head into the shallow water to put it into practice. Many people are standing up by the end of their first session.
Polzeath's surf schools also offer private and family lessons, children's surf clubs, multi day courses and coaching for improvers. Some also run paddleboard lessons and hire.
Choosing a surf school in Polzeath
Look for qualified instructors with up to date coaching and beach lifeguard awards, and schools accredited by Surfing England. Small groups mean more attention and faster progress, so it is worth asking about instructor ratios.
When to book
The busiest time is the summer holidays, when lessons can book up days in advance. Easter, May half term and September are quieter and still have good conditions for learning, with the water at its warmest in late summer and early autumn.
