UK Surf Shops

Find surf shops in the best surf towns in the UK.

A good surf shop is much more than a place to buy a wetsuit. It is where you get honest advice on the right board for your ability, find out where the waves are breaking today and meet the local surf community. The UK has a strong tradition of independent surf shops, many run by surfers who have been riding the local breaks for decades, alongside larger stores and well known surf brands.

What you will find in a surf shop

Most surf shops stock wetsuits, boards, leashes, wax, fins, boots, gloves and hoods, plus clothing and accessories. Many also offer board and wetsuit hire, which is a great way to try different equipment before you buy. Some carry boards made by local shapers, and some offer second hand boards or take trade ins, which can save you money as you progress.

Choosing the right wetsuit

In the UK, a good wetsuit makes all the difference. A 3/2mm suit is fine for summer in the South West, but for most of the year you will want a 4/3mm or 5/4mm suit, and in winter or in the North East and Scotland, boots, gloves and a hood as well. A good surf shop will help you find a wetsuit that fits properly, as a snug fit keeps you much warmer than a thicker suit that lets water in.

Choosing your first board

If you are new to surfing, a larger, thicker board with plenty of volume will help you catch more waves and progress faster. Foam boards and mini mals are popular first boards. As you improve, you can move to a shorter board that suits the waves you surf most. Ask the staff in your local shop for advice: they know the local waves and what works best on them.
