Where surf lessons take place in Portrush
East Strand, which runs from the town towards the Whiterocks cliffs, is the most popular beach for lessons, with plenty of space and gently sloping sand. West Strand, by the harbour, is more sheltered and can be used when the swell is big or the wind is from the east. Portstewart Strand, Castlerock and Benone are also a short drive away. Your instructor will choose the best spot on the day.
What to expect from a lesson
A typical beginner lesson lasts around two hours and includes a wetsuit, a soft foam board and safety equipment, with boots, gloves and hoods in the colder months. Your instructor will start on the beach, teaching you how to paddle, catch a wave and stand up, and explaining how to stay safe and spot rip currents. Then you will practise in shallow water. Many people stand up during their first lesson.
