Surf Schools in Gower

The Gower Peninsula is one of the best places in Wales to learn to surf. Its sandy beaches, from the huge sweep of Llangennith on the west coast to the smaller bays near Swansea, give surf schools plenty of options for finding safe, suitable waves. Gower has a long surfing history and a friendly local scene, and it is easy to reach from Swansea and the M4.

Where surf lessons take place on Gower

Llangennith, at the northern end of Rhossili Bay, is the most popular beach for lessons. It faces west into the Atlantic, picks up the most swell and has plenty of room. On the south coast, Caswell Bay and Langland Bay are closer to Swansea and Mumbles, and are good options when the wind is from the north or the swell is too big on the west coast. Your school will pick the best spot on the day.

What to expect from a lesson

A typical beginner lesson lasts two to three hours and includes a wetsuit, a soft foam board and safety equipment. Your instructor will start on the sand, teaching you how to paddle, catch a wave and stand up, and explaining how to stay safe and spot rip currents. Then you will head into the shallow water to practise. Most people stand up in their first or second lesson.

When to book

Lessons run from spring to autumn, and some schools teach all year. Summer weekends and school holidays are busy, so book ahead. Late summer and early autumn bring the warmest water.
