Surfing in Portrush

Portrush is a seaside town on Northern Ireland's Causeway Coast and the centre of surfing in the country. Set on a narrow headland with a sandy beach on each side, it catches swell from the North Atlantic and offers waves for surfers of every level. With the Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle and some of the most dramatic coastline in the British Isles nearby, it is a fantastic place for a surf trip.

Surfing in Portrush

The town has two main beaches. East Strand runs from the town towards the white cliffs at Whiterocks, and is the most popular surf beach in the area, with plenty of room and peaks along its length. West Strand, beside the harbour and close to the town centre, is a little more sheltered and can be a good option when the swell is big or the wind is from the east.

A short drive west, Portstewart Strand, Castlerock and Benone offer miles more sand and different angles to the swell, so there is usually somewhere to surf whatever the conditions. There are also reef breaks along the coast for experienced surfers who know where to look.

When to surf in Portrush

The best surf arrives from autumn to spring, when North Atlantic low pressure systems send swell onto the coast. Southerly winds blow offshore on these north facing beaches, which helps clean up the waves. Summer is smaller and is the best time for lessons, with lifeguards on the busiest beaches. The water is cold for much of the year, so a 5mm wetsuit, boots and gloves are needed from late autumn to spring.

Portrush has a lively seafront with cafes, restaurants and amusements, and it is known around the world for its golf course, which has hosted The Open Championship. The Giant's Causeway, Bushmills and the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge are all within a short drive.
