Tynemouth is a seaside village at the mouth of the River Tyne and the heart of surfing in the North East of England. With a sandy beach, historic priory, cafes and a Metro station connecting it to Newcastle city centre in under half an hour, it is one of the easiest surf towns in Britain to reach. The local surf community is friendly and growing, and you will find surfers in the water all year round.
Surfing in Tynemouth
Longsands is the main surf beach, a wide stretch of sand that runs north from the village. It picks up North Sea swell from the north and east and has several peaks along its length, making it suitable for beginners and experienced surfers alike. It is the base for local surf schools and lessons, and has cafes and facilities close by.
King Edward's Bay, a small cove beneath the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, is more sheltered and can be a good option when Longsands is too big or messy. There are also reef breaks along the coast that offer quality waves for experienced surfers on the right swell and tide.
When to surf in Tynemouth
The best surf usually arrives from autumn to spring, when low pressure systems pass to the north and east of Britain and send swell into the North Sea. Swells can arrive and fade quickly, so it is worth keeping an eye on the forecast. Westerly winds blow offshore here, which is common in this part of the country.
The North Sea is cold, dropping to around 6 or 7 degrees in late winter, so a 5mm wetsuit, boots, gloves and a hood are essential in the colder months.
