Abersoch is a lively seaside village on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales and the main surf and watersports hub for the region. In summer, its harbour and beaches are busy with sailors, paddleboarders, swimmers and surfers, and its shops, cafes and bars give it a holiday atmosphere. With the mountains of Snowdonia on the horizon, it is one of the most scenic places in Britain to get in the water.
Surfing near Abersoch
The village beach sits on a sheltered bay that rarely gets surf, but the main surf beach is just a few miles away. Porth Neigwl, better known as Hell's Mouth, is a four mile long beach that faces southwest into the Irish Sea and picks up swell travelling up St George's Channel. It is the most consistent surf spot in North Wales, with plenty of space and peaks along the beach for surfers of all levels. The name comes from its reputation among sailors, who feared being blown onto the beach in a storm.
Porth Ceiriad, to the east of Abersoch, is a smaller beach backed by cliffs. It can produce good waves when Hell's Mouth is too big or the wind is from the west.
When to surf in Abersoch
The surf is most consistent from autumn to spring, when Atlantic low pressure systems send swell into the Irish Sea. Summer is often small, which makes it a great time for lessons and paddleboarding. Light northerly or easterly winds give the best conditions at Hell's Mouth.
Watersports in Abersoch
Abersoch is just as famous for sailing, dinghy racing and watersports as for surfing. The sheltered bay is perfect for learning to paddleboard, kayak or windsurf, and local shops offer hire, lessons and kit for every activity.
