Freshwater West is a remote and beautiful beach on the south coast of Pembrokeshire, and it is one of the most consistent and powerful surf spots in Wales. There is no town here, just a long stretch of sand backed by huge dunes, facing west into the Atlantic swell. It is a place that rewards anyone who makes the effort to get there, with wild scenery and quality waves.
Surfing at Freshwater West
Freshwater West picks up more swell than almost anywhere else in South Wales, so it often has waves when other beaches are flat. The beach break can be powerful and fast, particularly at low tide, and the waves change with the shifting sandbanks. It is best suited to intermediate and experienced surfers.
The beach is known for strong rip currents, which make it one of the more hazardous beaches in Wales for swimmers and inexperienced surfers. RNLI lifeguards patrol the beach in summer, and it is important to stay between their flags and follow their advice. If you are new to surfing, book a lesson with a local surf school, who will choose the safest place and time to get in the water.
The area around Freshwater West
The beach is part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and is surrounded by unspoilt countryside. It has appeared in major films, including Harry Potter, and a small hut on the beach shows how local seaweed was once dried to make laverbread. The Castlemartin military range sits next to the beach, so check for road closures before you travel. Nearby, the villages of Angle and Bosherston and the beaches at Broad Haven South and Manorbier are well worth exploring.
When to surf at Freshwater West
Autumn, winter and spring bring the most powerful surf. Summer is smaller and the best time for lessons, while easterly winds blow offshore here and give the cleanest conditions.
