Surfing in Saltburn

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a Victorian seaside town on the North Yorkshire coast, south of the Tees, and it is one of the best places to surf in the North East. With its pier, cliff lift and long sandy beach backed by dramatic cliffs, it has bags of character, and its surf community is one of the most established in the north of England. Local surfers have been riding the waves here for decades.

Surfing in Saltburn

The main beach runs either side of the pier and picks up swell from the north and northeast. The pier itself helps shape sandbanks, creating peaks on both sides, and the long beach means there is plenty of room to spread out. It is a good beach to learn on, with surf schools and shops just a short walk from the water.

To the east, Huntcliff and the reefs along the coast towards Skinningrove offer quality waves for experienced surfers on the right swell and tide. To the west, the beach continues towards Marske and Redcar, giving more options when Saltburn is busy.

When to surf in Saltburn

The most consistent surf arrives from autumn to spring, when North Sea swells are at their best. Summer is smaller and the best time for lessons, with lifeguards on the beach. Swells can come and go quickly, so watch the forecast and be ready to go. Southwesterly winds blow offshore here and are common.

The water is cold for much of the year, so a 5mm wetsuit, boots and gloves are needed from late autumn to spring.

Things to do in Saltburn

Saltburn's water powered cliff lift has been carrying visitors between the town and the pier since the 1880s. The town has independent cafes, shops and pubs, and the Valley Gardens are a lovely place for a walk. The Cleveland Way and the North York Moors are close by.
