Porthcawl is a seaside town on the South Wales coast, between Swansea and Cardiff, and it is one of the busiest surf spots in Wales. A cluster of beaches and reefs within a short distance of the town centre means there is usually somewhere to surf, and its location just off the M4 makes it easy to reach for a quick session. The town has a long surfing history and a strong community of surf clubs, schools and local surfers.
Surfing in Porthcawl
Rest Bay, on the western edge of town, is Porthcawl's main surf beach. It faces west into the Bristol Channel and picks up most swells, with a mix of sand and rock that creates good peaks across the bay. It is popular with surf schools and has a watersports centre and cafe overlooking the beach. On big days it can be powerful, so beginners should stick to the lifeguarded area.
Closer to the town centre, Coney Beach and Sandy Bay are more sheltered and can be good options when the swell is large. There are also reef breaks along the coast that offer quality waves for experienced surfers, and the beaches at Ogmore and Southerndown are a short drive away.
When to surf in Porthcawl
The most consistent swell arrives from autumn to spring. Summer is smaller, which makes it the best time to learn, with RNLI lifeguards on the main beaches. The Bristol Channel has a large tidal range, so the waves change a lot through the day. Ask a local surf school or check a tide table to find the best time to go.
Things to do in Porthcawl
Porthcawl has a traditional seaside promenade, a harbour and plenty of places to eat. It hosts one of the largest Elvis festivals in the world every September, and the Royal Porthcawl golf course sits just behind Rest Bay.
