Croyde is a pretty village on the North Devon coast and one of the most famous surf spots in England. Its compact, sandy bay is tucked between two headlands and picks up plenty of Atlantic swell, producing some of the punchiest and best quality beach break waves in the country. With thatched cottages, surf hire shops and pubs a short walk from the sand, it has a surf village atmosphere that is hard to match.

Surfing at Croyde

Croyde Bay faces west and works on most swells. At low tide the waves can be fast and hollow, which makes them exciting for experienced surfers but challenging for beginners. Around mid and high tide the waves are softer and more suitable for learning. The bay can get crowded in summer, so arrive early or surf away from the main peaks if you are still finding your feet.

Croyde is perfectly placed for other surf beaches too. Saunton Sands, just to the south, is a long, gentle beach that is ideal for longboarding and lessons. To the north, Putsborough and Woolacombe offer three miles of sand and some shelter from southwesterly winds. With so many options close together, you can usually find a good wave somewhere nearby.

When to surf in Croyde

Summer is busy, with smaller waves and RNLI lifeguards on the beach, making it the best time for lessons. Autumn brings the best surf of the year, with consistent swell, warmer water and fewer crowds. Winter can be excellent for experienced surfers, and spring often brings clean, uncrowded mornings.
