The Gower Peninsula, just west of Swansea, was the first place in Britain to be named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it is one of the best surf areas in Wales. Its coastline is packed with sandy bays, limestone cliffs and quiet coves, and its position facing the Atlantic means there is often a wave somewhere on the peninsula. It is easy to reach from Swansea and the M4, which helps make it one of the busiest surf spots in South Wales.
Gower's surf beaches
On the west coast, Llangennith and Rhossili form one long beach, almost three miles of sand that faces straight into the Atlantic swell. Llangennith, at the northern end, is the most consistent surf beach on Gower and a popular spot for lessons. Rhossili, at the southern end, is overlooked by the famous Worm's Head and offers stunning scenery.
The south coast of the peninsula, closer to Swansea, has a string of smaller bays including Caswell, Langland and Oxwich. These beaches are more sheltered and need a bigger swell to break, but they work well on northerly winds when the west coast is blown out. Langland and Caswell are popular with local surfers and surf schools, with cafes close to the beach.
When to surf on Gower
Autumn and winter bring the most consistent swell, and spring can be excellent too. Summer is smaller and is the best time for lessons, with RNLI lifeguards on the busiest beaches. A 5mm wetsuit and boots are recommended from late autumn to spring.
Things to do on Gower
Gower is great for walking, with the Wales Coast Path running around the whole peninsula. Three Cliffs Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in Wales, and the seaside village of Mumbles has cafes, ice cream and a pier.
