Woolacombe is a classic seaside resort on the North Devon coast with one of the best beaches in Britain. Three miles of golden sand run south from the village to Putsborough, backed by dunes and open to the Atlantic, so there is plenty of room for surfers, families and everyone in between. It has a friendly, holiday feel and is one of the most popular places in the South West to learn to surf.

Surfing at Woolacombe

Woolacombe Sands faces west and picks up most Atlantic swells. The waves are usually gentle and break over a flat, sandy bottom, which makes it ideal for lessons, bodyboarding and longboarding. On bigger swells the beach can produce powerful waves and strong currents, so it is worth checking conditions with the lifeguards or a local surf school before heading out.

At the southern end, Putsborough is tucked in below the headland of Baggy Point. It is sheltered from southwesterly winds and often has cleaner waves when the rest of the beach is choppy. At the northern end, near the village, Combesgate and Barricane are smaller coves that are lovely for rock pooling and swimming.

Croyde and Saunton are just a few miles south, so on any given day you have a choice of several surf beaches within a short drive.

When to surf in Woolacombe

Summer is the busiest time, with RNLI lifeguards and smaller waves that suit beginners. Spring and autumn bring more consistent swell and quieter water. Winter is cold and can be powerful, and is best for experienced surfers.
