Bude sits on the far north coast of Cornwall, close to the Devon border, and is one of the most popular surf towns in the South West. It has a relaxed, family friendly feel, a string of sandy beaches within walking distance of the town centre and a long surfing history. Bude Surf Life Saving Club was one of the first in Britain, and the town has been producing good surfers ever since.
Bude's surf beaches
Summerleaze is the main town beach, sheltered by the breakwater and home to the much loved Bude Sea Pool, a tidal swimming pool built into the rocks. Next door, Crooklets is a lively beach break that picks up plenty of swell and is popular with local surfers. North of the town, Northcott Mouth and Sandymouth are quieter beaches backed by cliffs, best surfed around low tide.
A few miles south, Widemouth Bay is a long, open beach that works on most tides and is a favourite spot for surf lessons, with gentle waves on small days and enough room for everyone. Between them, these beaches mean there is usually somewhere to surf in Bude, whatever the wind is doing.
When to surf in Bude
Summer brings small, friendly waves and lifeguards on the main beaches, which makes it the best time to learn. Spring and autumn are excellent for improvers, with more consistent swell and fewer people. Winter surf can be big and powerful, and is best left to experienced surfers.
Things to do in Bude
Bude is more than a surf town. The Bude Canal runs from the beach into the countryside and is popular for walks and cycling, the South West Coast Path offers dramatic cliff top views, and the town has plenty of cafes, pubs and places to stay. It makes a great base for a surf holiday with the family.
