Scarborough is a historic seaside town on the North Yorkshire coast and the main surf town in Yorkshire. Its castle sits on a headland between two sweeping bays, and the coast either side of the town has a mix of beaches, reefs and points that can produce excellent waves. It has a friendly surf community, a strong surf shop culture and plenty to do away from the water.
Surfing in Scarborough
North Bay and South Bay sit either side of the castle headland. Because they face in slightly different directions, one is often better than the other depending on the wind and swell, which gives local surfers options. North Bay is more exposed and picks up more swell, while South Bay, beside the harbour, is more sheltered and only works on bigger swells.
Just south of the town, Cayton Bay is the most popular surf beach in the area. Its sandy beach works on most swells and tides, and it is a good place for lessons and beginners. There are also reef and point breaks along the coast that offer quality waves for experienced surfers who know the area.
When to surf in Scarborough
The best surf arrives from autumn to spring, when low pressure systems in the North Sea send swell onto the Yorkshire coast. Swells from the north and northeast are the most productive. Summer is often smaller and is a good time for lessons. Westerly winds blow offshore on much of the coast.
The water is cold for much of the year, so a 5mm wetsuit with boots and gloves is standard from late autumn to spring.
