Thurso is the most northerly town on the British mainland and home to one of the best waves in Europe. Set on the coast of Caithness, looking out towards Orkney, it is a long way from anywhere, but surfers from around the world make the trip to ride its powerful reef breaks. For those who make the journey, the reward is world class surf, empty line ups and wild, beautiful scenery.
Surfing in Thurso
Thurso East is the most famous wave in Scotland. It is a long, powerful right hand reef break that peels along a flat slab of rock beside the mouth of the River Thurso, overlooked by the ruins of Thurso Castle. On a good swell it is one of the best waves in Europe, and it has hosted international surf competitions. It is shallow, heavy and only suited to experienced surfers.
There are other reef breaks along the coast, including Brims Ness to the west, which are equally serious and need local knowledge. For beginners and improvers, Dunnet Bay, a few miles east of Thurso, is a long sandy beach with much gentler waves. It is the best place in the area for lessons and learning.
When to surf in Thurso
Autumn and spring often bring the best conditions, with good swell and reasonable daylight. Winter can be excellent but is cold and dark, with only a few hours of daylight. Summer brings long days, with light late into the evening, and smaller waves that are better for learning. Southerly winds blow offshore on the north coast.
The water is cold all year, ranging from around 7 degrees in winter to about 13 in late summer, so a 5mm wetsuit, boots, gloves and a hood are needed for most of the year.
The area around Thurso
Thurso is a good base for exploring the far north of Scotland. Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of mainland Britain, is close by, and ferries from nearby Scrabster sail to Orkney. The North Coast 500 driving route passes through the town.
