Brighton is one of the liveliest seaside cities in Britain, and beneath the piers, beach bars and crowds there is a passionate surf community. The waves here are not as consistent as in the South West, but when the conditions are right, the city's beaches can deliver fun surf just an hour from London. Brighton also has a thriving watersports scene, with paddleboarding, kitesurfing and sea swimming all popular along the seafront.
Surfing in Brighton
Brighton's beaches are steep and made of shingle, and the seafront is lined with groynes and two piers. These structures help shape the waves, creating peaks along the beach when a swell arrives. The surf here comes mostly from storms and strong southwesterly winds in the English Channel, so waves tend to be short period and arrive quickly. The best sessions often come just as a storm is passing and the wind starts to ease or swing to the north.
Because the beaches are shingle and the groynes can be hazardous, it is important to choose where you enter and leave the water carefully, especially in bigger surf. Local surf shops and clubs are the best place to ask about conditions and where to go on the day.
When to surf in Brighton
Autumn and winter bring the most surf, when deep low pressure systems sweep through the Channel. Summer is often flat or very small, which is when paddleboarding and kitesurfing take over. Many local surfers keep an eye on the forecast and are ready to go at short notice.
Beyond Brighton
Along the Sussex coast, East Wittering to the west and Camber Sands to the east are popular alternatives that can pick up different swells. Both are within an easy drive.
