Bantham is a small village in the South Hams of Devon, set at the mouth of the River Avon, and it is the best known surf spot on the south coast of England. Its sandy beach, dunes and estuary make it one of the most beautiful places to surf in the country. When a good swell arrives, local surfers from across South Devon head here for long, peeling waves with a relaxed atmosphere.

Surfing at Bantham

Bantham faces southwest, so it needs a decent Atlantic swell from the southwest or west to break properly. These swells are most common from autumn to spring. When they arrive, the waves can peel along the sandbanks at the mouth of the estuary and across the main beach, offering rides for everyone from beginners to experienced surfers. Light northerly or northeasterly winds give the cleanest conditions.

The estuary has strong currents, especially on a falling tide, so be careful near the river mouth and stay within the lifeguarded areas in summer. Local surf schools and the lifeguards can tell you where it is safest to surf on the day.

The area around Bantham

Across the estuary, Bigbury-on-Sea and Burgh Island are a short walk away at low tide. The island is famous for its Art Deco hotel and the sea tractor that carries visitors across when the tide is in. Challaborough, just along the coast, also gets surf on bigger swells. The beach and much of the village are part of a private estate, so parking is in the beach car park, which charges a fee.

When to surf at Bantham

Autumn and winter are the most reliable seasons for surf. Summer is often small, which makes it ideal for lessons, paddleboarding and swimming. The beach can be busy on sunny weekends, so early mornings are a good time to go.
