Bournemouth is one of the most popular seaside towns in the south of England, with seven miles of golden sand stretching from Southbourne in the east to Sandbanks in the west. It is best known for its beaches, piers and summer crowds, but it also has an active surf and watersports community. The town is easy to reach from London and the South East, which makes it a great place to learn and to fit in a session when the waves arrive.

Surfing in Bournemouth

Bournemouth's beaches face south into the English Channel, so the surf here depends on swell from Atlantic storms making its way up the Channel, or on strong local winds. Waves are generally smaller and less consistent than in the South West, which makes them friendly for beginners and longboarders. When a good southwesterly swell arrives, usually in autumn and winter, the beaches around Boscombe and Southbourne can produce fun, rideable waves.

Because the coastline is long and open, you can usually find a spot that suits the conditions, and the promenade makes it easy to check the waves along several beaches.

Watersports in Poole Harbour

Next door, Poole Harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Its shallow, sheltered water is perfect for learning to windsurf, kitesurf and paddleboard, and many local shops and centres offer lessons and hire. On flat days, it gives surfers plenty of other ways to get on the water.

When to surf in Bournemouth

The most reliable surf arrives between October and March, when low pressure systems send swell up the Channel. Summer is often small or flat, so it is a good time for lessons and paddleboarding. Light northerly winds blow offshore on these beaches.
