Polzeath is a small village on the north Cornish coast with one of the best beginner surf beaches in the country. Its wide, sandy bay faces west into the Atlantic and catches plenty of swell, but the waves usually break gently over a long, flat beach, which makes it a perfect place to learn. It is also where many families come back to year after year for their summer holidays.
Surfing at Polzeath
The main beach, also known as Hayle Bay, is the heart of the village and the surf. At low tide it is huge, with room for lessons, bodyboarders and surfers to spread out. At high tide the beach shrinks and the waves can become steeper and closer to the shore. On small summer days it is a great longboard and beginner wave, while autumn and winter swells can produce more powerful surf for experienced riders.
Just around the headland, Daymer Bay sits inside the Camel Estuary and is more sheltered. It only picks up surf on big swells, but it is a lovely spot for paddleboarding, swimming and families with young children.
The area around Polzeath
Polzeath is surrounded by beautiful coast. Pentire Head, to the north, is owned by the National Trust and has some of the best walking on the South West Coast Path. The village of Rock is a short drive away, with a passenger ferry across the estuary to Padstow, famous for its harbour and restaurants. The coast here is also part of a voluntary marine conservation area, and you may spot seals and dolphins offshore.
When to surf in Polzeath
Summer is the best time to learn, with small waves, warmer water and RNLI lifeguards on the beach. Spring and autumn bring better swell and fewer crowds. The beach gets busy in the school holidays, so early mornings are the best time for a quieter session.
