Surfing in Perranporth

Perranporth is a busy seaside village on Cornwall's north coast with one of the longest beaches in the county. Three miles of golden sand stretch north from the village towards Penhale, giving surfers, families and walkers plenty of room even in the height of summer. It is a laid back, friendly place to surf, with a beach bar right on the sand and a good mix of surf schools, shops and hire.
Surfing at Perranporth
The southern end of the beach, close to the village, is the busiest part and where most surf lessons take place. Here you will find Chapel Rock, with its tidal pool, and the cliffs of Droskyn Point, which offer some shelter from southwesterly winds. Further north, the beach becomes Perran Sands and then Penhale, with open, exposed peaks that pick up more swell and are often quieter.
Because the beach faces west and northwest into the Atlantic, it catches most swells. On small days it is ideal for beginners and longboarders. On bigger days the waves can be powerful, with strong currents, so stick to the lifeguarded areas if you are not an experienced surfer.
Holywell Bay and nearby
A few miles north, Holywell Bay is a beautiful beach backed by dunes, with surf schools of its own and a quieter feel. Newquay and its beaches are a short drive further along the coast, so there are plenty of options when the swell or wind changes.
When to surf in Perranporth
Summer brings smaller waves and RNLI lifeguards, making it the best time to learn. Spring and autumn offer better swell and fewer crowds, and the low winter sun over the dunes makes for some memorable sessions.
Things to do in Perranporth
Away from the surf, the village has cafes, pubs and shops, and the South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs in both directions. The dunes behind the beach are great to explore, and St Piran's Oratory, linked to the patron saint of Cornwall, is hidden among them.
